Fog Over the Sea and Good Friday

It is fitting to behold, I think, when a fog shrouds the sea. For although humans have traversed it many times, the sea is still mysterious to us. It is still more powerful than us. It still teaches us that we are small.
Long has image of the sea, into which every river empties, brought with it the thought of the grave, inside of which every life ends. It is deep, it is beyond our understanding, and though we had the eyes of an eagle, we could never see the opposite shore. And the land floating far off, beyond sight, is as a symbol for longing.
Just as we know not what waits, what breathes far below the restless face of the sea, just as we cannot perceive what country, what kingdom waits on the other side, so we know not what we shall behold when we pass the boundaries of this world. We may guess, we may argue, but that knowledge is hidden. Best now that we hope in faith.
And so it is fitting that the sea be shrouded with fog, embodying for our eyes the truth that always is.

Of course, that is not the only, nor, certainly, the most important truth that was embodied in our world. And there are mysteries deeper than the sea and deeper than the grave, and older, stronger than both. Today we remember one of the greatest of mysteries, holy sacrifice of Divine Love that did bring us life.

"But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus."  Romans 3:21-26 (NKJV)
